English Skills Enhancement

There are seven sessions available on our English Skills Enhancement course. They are designed to help NQTs, RQTs, TAs, HLTAs, teachers returning to work, or those moving year groups to refresh and enhance their understanding of the content, expectations and pedagogy of this core subject.

The seven sessions:

SPAG: Destination Year 6

Two linked sessions that aim to build the participants’ confidence in their subject knowledge by unpicking grammar terminology and providing practical approaches and techniques to using and teaching grammar. The statutory requirements for each year group will be explored, ensuring an understanding of progression of content and skills from Years 1 to 6.

5th and 12th November 8:30am - 12:30pm

Phonics to Spelling

Through exploring practical strategies & activities to support phonic learning at KS1 and KS2, we will ensure participants have a clear and solid knowledge of the progression within phonics and how it is critical to successful reading, spelling and writing in KS2.

19th November, 8:30am - 12:30pm

Reading for mastery

This session looks in detail at the requirements of the national curriculum for reading. It examines the progression of skills in both word reading and comprehension from Year 1 to Year 6 with practical advice on how to develop these. It aims to support participants in developing a love of reading in their classrooms.

26th November, 8:30am - 12:30pm

Writing for Years 1 & 2

Building on sound grammar subject knowledge, this session focuses on the contextualised teaching of grammar and examines how grammatical choices shape meaning and make writing more effective. The wider curriculum opportunities for writing for a particular purpose and audience will also be addressed. We will share practical tips and strategies for developing writing skills to meet the end of key stage 1 expectations.

3rd December, 8:30am - 12:30pm

Writing for Years 3 & 4

As above, tailored for Years 3 & 4 with a reference to end of key stage 2 expectations

Leadership for all levels: an immersion approach to CPD

There are three courses, all of which examine different aspects of leadership. Each course is comprised of seven sessions grouped into three themes. The unique thing about them is that they are for leaders of all levels, from Subject Lead to Executive Principal.

Available courses

Curriculum: Intent, Implementation, Impact

Curriculum is the lifeblood of a school, its USP. With renewed focus, leaders audit curricula, create actions to explore change and ultimately assess its impact

Theme: Know It - Intent

Sessions

  • Unique Selling Points: Why your school?

  • Broad, balanced, deep and rich? Pedagogy as a choice

  • Bold beginnings, Age or Stage? Cognitive mapping and progression

Theme: Know How - Implement

Sessions

  • Structure: Learning, assessing, planning, teaching - embedding a cyclical approach

  • Narrative: capturing authentic voices, what actually works, sharing what works

Theme: Know What - Impact

Sessions

  • Curriculum offering Vs actual content, capturing external voices

  • Making the change, being brave, standing out and streamlining

The programme comprises seven individual sessions best experienced as complete course. It is designed around Ofsted’s recent inspection framework update.

It is possible to dip in and out of individual sessions if a school teacher has prior experience of curriculum design.

Each session is approximately 2 to 3 hours depending on content. To have the greatest impact, the complete programme should be completed over nine months with four or week gaps.

It is possible for the programme to be condensed into three 1-day sessions. This is particularly useful if an organisation wants to train 5 to 10 people instensively at the start of an academic year.

Organisation offer

£4000 (5 to 20 people; suggested two per setting)

1:1 Executive Coaching is available for an additional £750 per participant for five sessions during the course programme
